Rotorura

The best thermal site in Rotorura is Whakarewarewa where we were introduced the some of the culture or the Maori by our guide for the day, Carla. She made flax string right in front of us from the piece of flax she is holding in this photo.

Other Maori were carving huge sculptures.

And then others entertained us with the Haka, singing and dancing.

On a tour around the thermal valley, Carla told us about the Maori who found the hot springs and the fights they had to keep their find from other Maori tribes. The smells were predictable but the geysers, fumeroles, mud pools and hot springs were brilliant.
