Views from Mount Edgecombe Estate

We woke up this morning to beautiful blue skies and couldn't resist the urge for an early morning walk. We drove to Maker Church and strolled down to Plymouth Sound through the Mount Edgecombe Estate. As you can see the views were stunning. We never tire of this view of the Hamoaze or looking back at Millbrook, they remind us that it is so good just to be alive.

The weather was beautifully calm with hardly a breeze, but as we reached the shore by Drake's Island, unusually large waves were breaking onto the rocky shelf in one continuous roar of surf. Plymouth's breakwater usually keeps the waters inside the sound reassuringly calm. We sat and watched the waves, sunlight and surf until the need for a coffee grew irresistible.

After coffee we made our way back to Maker through the beautiful formal gardens of the estate. We are still finding hidden corners where some delightful, unknown shrub or tree takes our breath away. We came upon this lovely bush in full flower in a secluded hedged garden, we don't know what it is but we certainly intend to find out.

Birthday in Fowey

As we woke this morning to beautiful blue skies and warm sunshine we decided to have a day out exploring Fowey. We had an enjoyable birthday lunch in the King of Prussia, overlooking the harbour watching people on the river having a great time.

After lunch we hired a motorboat to explore the river Fowey. From the deepwater jetty upriver, where a large bulk carrier was unloading sand and salt for Cornwall's roads next winter, to the secluded backwater opposite the main jetty where the cormorants and herons fished with obvious enthusiasm, there was so much going on that the time flew by.

The church with its stunning stained glass windows and spectacular beamed roof is well worth a visit. For those wishing to keep fit, the walk back to the main car park is certainly a challenge.
